Head to Aviemore and soak up the atmosphere at some of the area’s big events, writes Susan Welsh
The Cairngorms National Park is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, diverse wildlife and outdoor activities. But it’s not all about peace and tranquillity as, this summer, the area will burst into life with the sound of rock bands, motorbikes and heavyweight athletes.
Folk rockers Mumford & Sons arrive in Aviemore this week with their Gentlemen of the Road tour as part of the Stopover Festivals, which will also see the likes of Ben Howard, Primal Scream, The Maccabees and a host of local talent take centre stage at the two-day festival in The Dell of Rothiemurchus.
Mumford & Sons will curate the weekend’s entertainment, with a strong emphasis on celebrating the diverse businesses and culture of Aviemore and the greater Badenoch and Strathspey community. Those looking to see more of the area can sign up for some of the walks organised as part of The Tomintoul and Glenlivet Walking Festival, which runs from August 27-31. The walks will follow some stunning trails, while Ranger Services will be staging localised summer walks throughout the area. The festival offers a wide range of walks for people of all capabilities. There is also a free ceilidh for participants on Sunday, August 30, at the Richmond Arms Hotel, Tomintoul. (www.tgwf.co.uk)
However, those who want their walks with a little bit more bite might want to head to Atholl Estates. Just like something out of Jurassic Park, youngsters will be able to take part in dinosaur tracking by following trails and clues. This self-guided trail is aimed at children, who should be accompanied by adults. It takes place at Glen Tilt, Blair Atholl, on Thursday, August 6, from 10.30am-noon and no booking is required. For those who enjoy traditional events, Thursday, August 13, is a red-letter day for the area, as that’s when the annual Grantown Show takes place at the town’s Heathfield Park. The programme includes livestock competitions and parades, a pageant of decorated vehicles, vintage motors, terrier racing, pets parade, tug o war and assorted children’s races and has numerous trade and craft stands and a super marquee dance in the evening. One of the more unusual events taking place within the Cairngorms National Park is Thunder in the Glens – now officially the largest Harley-Davidson rally in the UK. Hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts will descend on Aviemore to share their passion for motorbikes with the public and fellow-bikers. Thunder in the Glens runs from August 28-31. Even if you’re not a bike rider yourself, the sheer sound and sight of hundreds of beautifully maintained bikes and riders making their way through the village as they leave to go on a variety of rides is a sight not to be missed. But even although the area will be buzzing with activity, those seeking a relaxing day out will still be able to enjoy the quiet life as there are dozens of other events taking place this summer across the Cairngorms National Park.
