Sergei Ivanov has been reported missing from his home on Papa Westray

A Russian-born artist has been missing from his home on a small Orkney island for more than a week.

Sergei Ivanov was last seen at about 10am on Monday, April 3.

Police made an appeal to help trace him yesterday morning.

A major search was launched on the island, involving Kirkwall Lifeboat and coastguard ground teams.

Police said last night there is “concern” for Mr Ivanov’s welfare and urged anyone with information to come forward

Papa Westray, known locally as Papay, is one of Orkney’s northern isles and has a regular population of around 90.

Mr Ivanov is understood to have moved to the island from London more than 10 years ago.

He hosts the regular Gyro Nights contemporary arts festival in Orkney.

He has previously made headlines after his then teenage daughter Ekaterina Ivanova was involved in an affair with Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood in 2008.

The major search operation for Mr Ivanov involved the lifeboat from Kirkwall and a Shetland-based coastguard helicopter.

They were both used to transport coastguard ground teams from around Orkney to Papay to help with the search.

Normally the island is accessible by air via a flight from Westray and by ferry.

A police spokeswoman said: “Sergei Ivanov, 55, was last seen in Papa Westray, Orkney about 10am on Monday, April 3 and has not been seen since.

“There is concern for Sergei’s welfare so anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or to remain anonymous call the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Meanwhile searches continued in Plockton for a local man who has not been seen since the early hours of Saturday morning.

James Fewell, known as Bruce, was last seen about 12.30am at the Plockton Hotel.

Searches were ongoing throughout the weekend and they continued yesterday.

Coastguard teams from Gairloch, Applecross, Dunvegan, Kyle and Protree were all involved in coastline searches yesterday.

Police have previously described Mr Fewell as a “well-known” face around Plockton where he lives and works.

The 62-year-old is described as being around 6ft 1in in height and of slim build with long dark hair which is tied back in a pony tail.

When last seen he was wearing a blue woollen jumper and a pair of yellow wellington boots.

Anyone with information of his whereabouts is requested to contact 101 and quote Inverness reference NP2772/17.
