A Free Church of Scotland minister in the Western Isles is being investigated over claims he asked a teenage girl to send him explicit photographs.

Newly-married Rev David Macdonald, 25, has been suspended from his post as assistant minister at Back Free Church, near Stornoway on Lewis.

It is alleged he had convinced the girl to send him the photographs while he was a divinity student in Edinburgh.

He is said to have contacted the teenager, who is not underage, online while using a fake name.

He started at the church last August after appearing on camera for BBC Alba’s Bible Boys series.

It is understood Rev Macdonald’s wife Jayne is expecting the couple’s first child.

A police spokesman said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a report of inappropriate conduct has been received. Inquiries are at an early stage.

“It would therefore be inappropriate to comment further, other than to say Police Scotland is committed to thoroughly and sensitively investigating all complaints of inappropriate behaviour.”

A spokesman for the Free Church of Scotland said: “Western Isles Presbytery can confirm that, on March 1, 2018, it suspended an assistant minister pending an investigation.

“It would be inappropriate to comment any further until this process is complete. In line with best practice, the matter has been referred to the police.”
