Saying goodbye to an ideal home

Saying goodbye to an ideal home

When Pauline Reid and Owan Taylor first found 1 Oldman Road, Kirkton of Maryculter, they knew it was the one.

On the day that they viewed it, they decided they wanted it and went for it.

Three years on and the house still looks the same as it did the first day the couple moved in with their three children, Craig, Greg and Melissa.

For some, being able to put their stamp on a house is part of the decision on whether to buy it.

But this house was so perfect for the couple, they haven’t had to change a thing.

Living in Cults in a smaller house with three children reaching young adult age, Pauline and Owan decided it was time for a move.

“We basically wanted to find somewhere that would fit five adults in at the one time. The last one was too small,” Pauline, 47, who works as a district nurse, said.

“We were just looking for somewhere that had at least four bedrooms and had extra lounges.

“We never really thought about living here until this house came up. It’s so close to town and we thought it was nice and quiet in the country while still being only 10 minutes from Sainsburys.

“We found it quite quick. When you know it’s the one, you know, we just went for it.”

The couple fell in love with the house as a whole but a few rooms quickly became favourites.

“We loved the open-plan style of the kitchen, dining room and living room,” Pauline explained.

“We fell in love with the big room which has the big fireplace, high roofs and the wall to wall glass windows, it was just what we wanted.

“We have always gone for modern houses, it’s what we like. This one was ready to move into and we haven’t really had to do anything except move our furniture into it.”

Another particular favourite, especially for the men in the house, is the TV room, where they group together to watch a score of different sports.

But for Owan and Pauline, it’s the open-plan kitchen and dining room where they spend most of their time.

Pauline said: “We both quite like to cook, Owan is very good actually, and there is loads of space in this kitchen.

“At Christmas time I think we had about 13 people here, we put up another table so we didn’t need to use the breakfast bar, that was really great.”

For me, the highlight of the four-bedroom detached villa is the sun lounge on a split level. Sliding doors open out on to a balcony and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. With a large modern fireplace mounted on the wall, it seems like a great room to enjoy in all seasons.

The master suite comes with a semi-open-plan dressing room and an en-suite bathroom while on the basement level, there is an office with a WC cloakroom – perfect for those looking to work from home.

Outside the villa – on the market for offers over £695,000 – there is about

The garden at the back is landscaped and borders a lovely patio area. It is also home to a barbecue hut, which has power and lighting. It also includes a built-in fire for when the nights become chilly.

“The boys love the snug for parties and hanging out there with their friends,” Pauline said.

“For Craig’s 18th, he went in there with all his pals before they went into town. It’s a great thing to have.”

Number 1 Oldman Road is located in a tranquil hamlet of Kirkton of Maryculter, not far from Aberdeen.

Pauline said: “The location is great because it is so close to town but when you come home, it’s just so peace and quiet.

“I went back to visit some friends who live near our old house in Cults and it seemed so noisy. I came back here and it was so peaceful. It’s great in the winter as well because you always get deer coming into the garden, we normally watch them from our window.”

Now as the younger members of the house begin to leave the nest and buy their own dream homes, Owan and Pauline have decided to put their house on the market.

They hope to downsize and travel as well.

“I think I will miss the space the most. We’ve had a look at a few houses so far and they all seem so tiny. I think we’ve got too used to the space,” Pauline added.
