Volunteers prepare to make 80th open-air season go swimmingly

A team of volunteers are hard at work to ensure the north-east’s only open air swimming pool is in “pristine” condition for its 80th season.

The Stonehaven attraction had its best season since 2000 last year, with thousands of visitors splashing about throughout the summer.

It will open for its 80th season on May 31, but Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool and other volunteers are already working to spruce it up – while planning a fun-packed programme to celebrate the milestone.

As well as general repairs, the team are preparing to repaint the tank of the Olympic-sized pool to ensure it looks its best.

The yellow sun terrace will also be freshened up, along with the changing rooms.

Mike Robins, chairman of the group, said: “We’ve got a subcommittee looking at activities to make it a very, very special year. We won’t have another 80th so we’re looking forward to making it special.

“We’re looking at getting additional items, such as some new inflatables and poolside furniture to upgrade the pool to the standard we feel it should be.

“That is creating a fair bit of interest, and the business community are being very kind to us.

“We want to make sure the pool is pristine so people of all ages can have lots of fun.”

The full programme, which will be carefully timetabled to ensure people of all ages can enjoy the pool, will be revealed in the coming weeks.

David Dobbie, a trustee of the group, urged anyone interested in helping to spruce up the pool to pop along on a Monday or Wednesday from 1pm-4pm.

He said: “It’s weathered well this year, but it does lose its shine over the winter – everything needs a good clean and polish.

“We’ve got about 15-20 people regularly helping, but we’re always keen for anyone who has the time to come along.”
