Teenager Andrew sets new national record

Andrew McFarlane set a Scottish under-15 indoor pole vault record for the second time this season when clearing 3.55m in the Brunel jumps and throws meeting at Uxbridge.

The Inverness Harriers club member, who does not celebrate his 14th birthday until July, improved on his own previous national best of 3.40m set when competing as a guest at the Scottish masters championships at Glasgow’s Emirates arena at the beginning of the month.

His Uxbridge performance also gives him top spot in this year’s UK under-15 age group rankings.

McFarlane, who is coached by Duncan Flockhart and Brian Donaldson, also finished fifth in the English under-15 combined events championships at Sheffield with a pentathlon personal best points score of 2,413.

He set personal best times for the 60m hurdles (9.56sec), long jump (5.34m) and shot put (11.04m) and was narrowly outside his best in the high jump (1.59m) and 800m (2min 29.21sec).

Aberdeen’s Ben Hukins defeated a field of more than 1,500 runners to win the Alloa half marathon.

The Ronhill Cambuslang Harriers club member completed the course in 1hr 9min 31sec to finish well ahead of Edinburgh-based Polish athlete Patryk Gierjatowics who was runner-up in 1:10:52 while Mark Pollard (Inverclyde AC) was third in 1:12:25.

Aboyne runner Matt Sullivan (Shettleston Harriers) was eighth in 1:13:47.

Jennifer Emsley (Central AC), who was third in the previous weekend’s Inverness half marathon, won the women’s race in 1:17:33.

Nikki Bartlett was runner-up in 1:22:19 and Loch Ness marathon champion Megan Crawford (Fife AC) was third in 1:24:47.

Anne Docherty (Forres Harriers) won the over-65 women’s title in the British masters cross-country championships at Tollcross Park, Glasgow. The Scottish masters internationalist completed the 6km course in 32min 14sec to finish 31 seconds ahead of Elizabeth Gilchrist (Ferranti) with Sheila Thomson (Westerlands) third in 34:22.

Andrew Blackhall set a personal best time of 17min 15sec to win Saturday’s Aberdeen Parkrun 5km ahead of a field of 199 participants.

The Fraserburgh runner finished 12 seconds ahead of Deeside’s Colin Dempster while Chris Walsh also set his fastest time of 18:16 to take third position.

There was also a personal best for Emma Rice who led the women’s field home in 19:34, with Clare Russell (Metro Aberdeen) second in 21:00, 16 seconds ahead of Jennifer Murray.
