Tributes pour in for Scots golf caddie

Friends and colleagues have paid tribute to a north-east golf caddie killed by a suspected drink-driver in New York.

Neil Fyfe, 28, died while cycling home from his work at the Sebonack Golf Club at Southampton on Long Island when he was struck by a 4×4 at about 6.30pm on Friday local time.

Driver Jesse Steudte, of New York, was later charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Originally from Aberdeen, Mr Fyfe was also a club caddie at the exclusive Bear’s Club in Florida and would work for professional golfers who were practising at the course.

It is understood members of both clubs are rallying together to pay the cost of his parents’ flights to New York and to return Mr Fyfe’s body to Scotland.

Sebonack caddie master Jason Bunge, who worked with Mr Fyfe since 2012, said: “His infectious personality and clear joy in his life made being near him a pleasure.

“It’s rare these days to find someone who is actually living his dream and not just faking it. In 18 years of working at some of the top US courses, I have never met a man that wanted to be around the game more.”

Mr Fyfe, who dreamed of working on the PGA golf tour, had carried for the likes of Keegan Bradley, Dustin Johnston and basketball legend Michael Jordan.

Former world number one Luke Donald sent his condolences to the 28-year-old’s family and said: “So sad. Neil was a top guy.”

Those who worked with Neil described him as the “first to help out and last to leave”.
