A mature student who was caught speeding at 110mph so he could get home to finish coursework on time was fined £900 and banned from the road yesterday.
Elgin Sheriff Court heard Gary Williamson, 30, was driving at 50mph above the speed limit when he passed two police cars on November 10, 2013.
The court heard Williamson, of 38 Jamieson Drive, Elgin, was returning from a shift in a Fochabers pub at 11pm, and was in a rush to get college work completed by its deadline the next morning.
Police officers monitoring the A96 trunk road with hand-held laser devices tracked him driving at 110mph near Barmuckity – a 60mph zone.
Fiscal depute Kevin Corrins said: “Officers noticed the accused’s car was travelling at a particularly fast speed, and after catching up to him they pulled him over.
“When the officers spoke with him, Williamson indicated he was in a hurry.”
Williamson’s solicitor Matthew O’Neill, said: “My client had been working in a licensed premises in Fochabers and living in Elgin at the time of the incident.
“He had a college report to hand in the very next morning, and he was in a rush to get home so he could complete it.
“It came as a shock to my client when he was told how fast he was travelling.”
Sheriff David Hall disqualified Williamson from driving for 18 months.
