North-east rotary clubs participating in UK-wide prostate cancer cycle

Rotarians across the north-east are gearing up to participate in a UK-wide Father’s Day fundraising cycle to raise awareness of prostate cancer.

Laurencekirk Rotary Club is among those taking part in the Rotary Ride, a cycle which will involve clubs covering the length of the country to raise funds for prostate cancer research.

Cycling teams in towns and cities from Lerwick to Lands End will cover the distance in sections between their club boundaries.

The Laurencekirk cycle team will take over from the Stonehaven club and ride south to link up with the Montrose rotarians, with the process continuing southwards.

The event is taking place on Sunday, June 21, and president of the Laurencekirk’s rotary club, Mike Robson, said they already had a team of eager cyclists.

Clubs north of the border will raise money for Prostate Scotland.

Mr Robson added: “The idea is that we should cycle from between clubs. Our trip is going to Montrose and back. It is for prostate cancer and the fact it is on Father’s Day seemed quite a good idea.

“Most men my age have a lot of friends and acquaintances touched by the disease. In Scotland it is the most common cancer in men.

“I’m a regular cyclist, but my usual circuit is through Laurencekirk and not between towns.”

Everyone is welcome to participate in the event which will also include “static cycles” for those who don’t wish to hit the road.

Prostate Scotland spokesman Tim Dawson said: “It is a really exciting thing for us because prostate cancer is a massive killer and people don’t think of it in the same way that they do others like lung cancer.

“Most of the cyclist will be rotarians but anyone is welcome to get involved.”
