The all-weather sports ground used for training by Peterhead FC is in line for an upgrade worth more than £700,000.
Catto Park in Peterhead, opposite the port’s League One side’s home stadium, is also used by sporty residents of the town.
The park was last given an update in 1997.
Now Aberdeenshire Council’s infrastructure services team believe the grounds and the indoor changing rooms are coming to the end of their time.
The council wants to begin a phased redevelopment of the site and has proposed to set aside £726,000 to provide a brand new all-weather surface.
Councillors on the Buchan area committee will now be given their say on the scheme before a final decision is taken by the council’s policy and resources committee.
In 2013, the council began negotiating a £4million investment into the park as part of a £17million overhaul of the area in partnership with Peterhead Football Club (PFC).
In a report to go before the Buchan area committee on Tuesday, Stephen Archer, the council’s director of infrastructure services, said that discussions with PFC to develop the project were still on-going.
“PFC remain committed to a partnership to develop the wider proposals,” he added.
“The facilities would provide improved drainage for all existing pitches, a replacement all-weather football and rugby pitch, upgraded athletic track and an all-weather hockey surface.
“The existing football stand would be demolished and incorporated into a two storey ‘street’ style design incorporating café, changing, indoor sports halls, covered football facilities, integrated day care, gym and community meeting rooms.”
If the upgrade is approved, the existing football pitch would be removed and a new one would be set back from the current parking facilities on site to allow for the larger project to progress without delay once finalised.
Floodlights and new fencing would also be installed.
