Moray town lights up for Christmas

Christmas arrived in Elgin at the weekend with thousands turning up to watch the new festive lights being switched on.

Organisers hailed Saturday’s event a huge success and described the lights as “absolutely beautiful”.

Earlier in the day, Christmas shoppers browsed around dozens of stalls set up in the centre.

Hundreds of visitors also lined the streets to catch a glimpse of Santa and his reindeer as they paraded past at 2pm.

Entertainment was provided by a host of local bands.

Lossiemouth Military Wives Choir, Kinloss Military Wives Choir, The Exiles and Christie Row were among those who performed.

This year, for the first time, primary school pupils were asked to play a part in the celebrations.

Around 80 pupils – clad in festive hats – took part in the children’s parade.

They also sang to the crowds.

At 5pm, there was a big countdown and the lights were switched on.

The event was organised by Elgin Business Improvement District (BID).

Manager Gill Neill, said: “It was a lovely day and we had really good crowds.

“It was a bit damp in the morning which was disappointing but it did not dampen the spirits of everyone who came along.

“The reindeer parade was very  popular with hundreds and hundreds of people lining the road to see them.

“We also had a lot of live entertainment, all local bands, and they were fantastic.

“They all gave up their own time to do this for the city which is fantastic.

“The new lights just looked absolutely beautiful – really lovely. We are delighted with them.

“It was very much a community event and it was just lovely having all the children involved – they looked so cute.”

It was a first chance for residents to view the £50,000 decorations, which were funded in partnership between Elgin Bid and the Elgin Town Centre Benevolent Trust.

Meanwhile, in Lossiemouth, Hollyoaks actor Ashley Taylor Dawson, who plays Darren Osborne, turned on the Christmas lights.
