The north-east will wake up to a colder morning today as temperatures are set to drop across the region.

The Met Office last night issued an ice warning as yesterday’s already lying snow and melt are expected to freeze over.

Higher-up areas in the central and northern Highlands and parts of western Aberdeenshire are also predicted to be covered in more of the white stuff this morning.

Inland areas of Aboyne, Ballater and Braemar saw the highest levels of snowfall yesterday with 5cm being recorded at Aboyne.

Schools in Aberdeenshire were closed yesterday due to the wintery weather with school bus routes being badly hit by snow but all were expected to be open today.

Banchory primary, Strachan and Towie schools were all closed yesterday and Aboyne Academy was partially closed to all but local pupils and staff.

Greg Wolverson, a Met Office forecaster based in Aberdeen, said today would be a much more pleasant and enjoyable snow day. He said: “The cold systems that caused the snow fall have moved away to southern Scotland leaving a calmer situation in the north. This in turn will mean temperatures are expected to drop and it will feel a lot colder on Friday morning.

“An ice warning has been issued for the whole of Scotland for Friday as the already wet surfaces and lying snow are likely to freeze over after a much colder night.

“Higher ground could see more snow showers topping up the snow levels, but overall Friday is looking likely to be a very pleasant and calm day – a good day for enjoying the snow.

“It will be all change for the weekend however as winds will pick up again causing snow melt and milder rain.”

Drivers across Scotland experienced major delays on their commute yesterday morning after waking up to frosty windscreens.

The A82 Glasgow to Fort William road was blocked yesterday by a fallen tree at Duck Bay, near Balloch – but it was cleared by around 8.10am, when traffic starting to flow again.

And the A9 Perth to Inverness road experienced heavy snow fall in the early hours of the Thursday morning leading to difficult driving conditions, particularly around Drumochter and the Slochd.

The B974 Banchory to Fettercairn road remained closed last night at the Cairn o’ mount section, but in Braemar the snow gate was open.

Two flights from Aberdeen to Heathrow at 8.30am and 4.10pm had to be cancelled yesterday as was the late afternoon flight to Amsterdam.
