A man died last night in a horrific crash on the north-east’s busiest road.
Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the A90 Aberdeen to Dundee road, at the Lumgair junction, near Stonehaven, just before 5pm.
One man died at the scene, while another was cut free of the wreckage and taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Last night police confirmed the second casualty’s injuries were “serious but not life-threatening”.
The tragic news first came from the fire service, with a spokeswoman confirming: “There was one male fatality.
“One male casualty was extricated from his vehicle and then the crews made the scene safe.”
Fire crews had been called to the scene at 4.47pm and remained there for a little over an hour.
The main road south of Aberdeen was closed in both directions for several hours to allow the emergency services access.
Police remained at the scene long into the night to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Last night, a spokesman for the force said: “Police are currently in attendance following a serious road crash between two vehicles on the A90 Aberdeen to Dundee road at the Lumgair junction, near Stonehaven.
“The crash happened at about 5pm. A man has been pronounced dead at the scene.
“Another man has been taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.
“The road is closed in both directions at Stonehaven and diversions are in place.”
The prolonged closure of the A90 Aberdeen to Dundee road forced police officers to put in place rush hour diversions.
Nose-to-tail traffic trailed through pitch black Aberdeenshire back roads to find the A92 Stonehaven to Dundee coastal road.
There were also significant delays on a number of additional rural routes surrounding the A90.
