An Aberdeen councillor has helped to deliver 700 food parcels to those most in need throughout the city to help them through financial struggles exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.

Lower Deeside councillor Tauqeer Malik started delivering the free bags of food and other essential goods to communities in Peterculter alongside the help of his friends four weeks ago, and after his kind deeds proved popular, he expanded it to other regions of the city, including Tillydrone, Torry, Northfield and Garthdee.

Yesterday Mr Malik set up at the shops on Provost Watt Drive in Kincorth, and distributed the parcels to families requiring assistance.

The care packages contain nine items such as tea bags, rice pudding, beans, sugar, long-life milk, cereal and protective masks.

Mr Malik said: “This coronavirus has shown us that communities right across Aberdeen must work together to help those most in need in our society.

“It has been a real honour to provide food parcels to those most in need, especially in our regeneration areas.

“I have been struck by the genuine kindness of people who have contacted me to thank us for helping out in their time of need.

“Aberdeen City Council and agencies such as Community Food Initiatives North East who help those most in need every single day are to be commended.

“I only hope that my small contribution goes a long way to help any family suffering with food poverty in this coronavirus pandemic.”
