Communities across the north-east have banded together to help businesses and charities affected by chaotic weather at the start of the week.

Storms and torrential rainfall tormented Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire on Wednesday morning as businesses flooded, schools closed and cars floated in the water left behind.

Local animal charity, Mrs Murray’s Cat and Dog Home, had to move animals from flooded kennels as food and blankets were destroyed.

Manager Laura Frackowiak said they were completely overwhelmed by the generosity of people since the flood.

“We were completely overwhelmed by the public generosity, straight away people were donating food and bedding. We were truly shocked – people were even phoning up and donating over the phone.

“It was so touching to see how people actually responded and we received an amazon delivery with over 30 packages. The Amazon driver was a bit taken aback.

“The dogs are back in their kennels all cosy with the bedding and one dog who is on special puppy food now has that. So they’re all happy.”

The base for LGBT+ charity, Four Pillars was also badly damaged by flooding one day after its new home was announced.

Deejay Bullock, community relations manager, said that although the landlord would be covering repair costs, they had been inundated with well wishes from the public.

He said: “There’s been a lot of support around us since the flooding. It’s been amazing – people often rally around after things like this and it shows human spirit.”

The Carron Fish Bar in Stonehaven was also badly affected by the floods but due to a community effort have managed to reopen earlier than expected.

Manager Murray Watson said that water was sadly an unstoppable force.

She said: “We got a lot of help from a local firm and the council kept sending trucks around to collect waste.

“Staff worked incredibly hard and long hours as local cleaning firms cancelled jobs to help.

“Stonehaven is known for flooding but it always brings people in the community together.”

West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine MP, Andrew Bowie, will also be holding an emergency surgery for his constituents.

It will be held on Monday, August 17 between 9.30am and 11.30am at the Belvedere Hotel in Stonehaven.

People are being asked to phone in advance if they plan to attend on 01330 705013.
