Summer gala fun kicks off at Peterhead

The north-east’s biggest summer gala kicked off on Saturday with a colourful town centre celebration.

Aberdeenshire Council provost Jill Webster had the honour of crowning the Buchan Queen at Peterhead Scottish Week’s traditional opening ceremony.

Hundreds of families flocked to the town’s Drummers Corner for a day of carnival-style celebrations, despite thunder and heavy showers earlier that morning.

Saturday’s line-up began with a performance by the 6.1.0. Dance Academy from Fraserburgh, followed by a Disney sing-a-long.

As the rain eased off, the crowds grew.

The programme continued with traditional highland dancing from the Lawrence Dance Academy and then Scots folk songs from local singer Barbara Ann Burnett, before a flashmob-style performance of Amazing Grace by members of the audience.

Mrs Webster told the crowd she was looking forward to her first Scottish Week, before crowning this year’s Buchan Queen Natasja Kaminski.

Fraserburgh Pipe Band brought the ceremony to a close.

Yesterday, torrential downpours played havoc with the scheduled and a planned outdoor picnic event and cycle run were cancelled.

A family fun day was held at Peterhead Football Club and a procession by the Can-Am Pipes and Drums Band went ahead in the town centre.

Scottish Week has been held in the town every year since 1961 and brings thousands of visitors to the Blue Toon.

Scottish Week-style celebrations were rife in towns and villages across the country during the 1960s, but gradually died out.

The Peterhead event is now the only one of its kind in Scotland.

Among the highlights in this year’s packed programme include a display by the Blades aerobatic team and a show by the 3Sixty bicycle stunt crew.

A Peterhead’s Got Talent show and the Just Dance Concert are also expected to bring in the crowds.

Traditional favourites like the bay swim and raft race will return to the Lido on Thursday evening. A huge fireworks display will be held later that night.

The Blades will make a welcome return to the town on Friday at 7.30pm. All four pilots are former members of the Red Arrows.

Details and programmes are available from the festival box office in Marischal Street.
