An Aberdeen dad has been warned he faces jail after a he attacked a stranger in a bar with a glass leaving him scarred for life.

Gareth Power appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday and admitted committing the violent assault during a Christmas night out on December 20 last year.

The court heard the 31-year-old had initially been arguing with a friend of Ryan Stephen while they were in Society Bar on Union Street.

Fiscal depute David Bernard told the court that the argument quickly began to turn physical and Mr Stephen tried to step in between the two men to break up the fight.

But Mr Bernard said Power picked up a glass and threw it at Mr Stephen, hitting him on the face and causing the glass to shatter on impact.

Power was escorted from the club and was later traced by police standing outside the nearby KFC restaurant.

The court heard, as a result of the assault, Mr Stephen was left with a cut above his left eyebrow that medics had to glue back together.

A doctors report shown to the court, alongside pictures of the wound, stated Mr Stephen would be left with a permanent scar.

Representing Power, of 46 Tollohill Square, Aberdeen, solicitor Gary Sturrock told the court his client was a first offender who earned around £30,000 a year as a road technical engineer.

Mr Sturrock asked for background reports to be called into his client’s character and said he wanted to reserve all other mitigation until they were prepared.

Sheriff Graeme Napier said he would call for the reports but warned Power he could be facing a jail sentence.

He said: “This is a nasty type of offence. For offences like these I normally send people to prison. I could send you without a report. It may be that you impress the social worker but you certainly haven’t impressed me.”

When referring to his victim Sheriff Napier added: “This young man has been left with a permanent scar because of your behaviour. In his victim impact statement he expresses concern about socialising because of the way he now looks.

“He will have a permanent reminded you your violence. You will be able to turn your back on this some time in the future. He won’t. Do not be surprised if I impose a custodial sentence.”
