Youth dancers visit Aberdeen as part of tour

A group of young Scottish dancers will perform in Aberdeen this weekend as part of a national tour.

Project Y, which is an initiative of YDance, will visit the city as part of the Aberdeen International Youth Festival (AIYF).

Art director and choreographer Anna Kenrick said: “We audition across Scotland for young contemporary dancers aged 16 to 21, and we take on about 25 dancers a year.”

The performers are taking part in an intensive four-week course which involves them working on projects with different choreographers, before touring various venues. The course gives them experience of what it is like to be part of a professional dance company.

“They work with three different choreographers,” said Ms Kenrick. “They spend the first week with me, then for the next two weeks they’re split into groups and work with two different choreographers. Then they come back together again.

“The dancers have a class in the morning then work creatively during the day making a piece, so it’s really busy and very intensive.”

The company showed off its skills with an opening performance in Glasgow on Thursday. It will visit Stirling this evening, before travelling to Aberdeen for the youth festival.

Taylor Ham, from Dundee, will dance in the show. The 18-year-old said: “We came up to Aberdeen last year too. It was really exciting – we performed in the Lemon Tree so it was good to be able to rehearse in a venue like that.

“We always look forward to performing in Aberdeen, because it’s a good opportunity to show everyone what we’re like.”

The dancers will perform at Aberdeen Arts Centre and Theatre Aberdeen tomorrow evening.
