An engineer has been allowed to keep his licence – despite driving at twice the speed limit on a north-east road.

Christopher Tilley appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday and admitted driving carelessly by overtaking a 4×4 on Craigton Road in the city at 60mph so he could get home for a dinner date with his partner.

The court heard the 39-year-old had been playing American football and was dirty and sweaty as he made his way back to Milltimber.

Knowing he was due to out for dinner that evening he became frustrated when the car he was travelling behind stayed at around 25mph on the 30mph road.

Afraid he was going to be late Tilley overtook the 4×4 at more than twice the speed limit.

The court heard he was previously charged with dangerous driving, however, the Crown accepted his plea to the lesser charge.

Representing the self employed engineer, solicitor Gregor Kelly asked Sheriff Graham Buchanan to allow him to keep his licence.

Mr Kelly said he had worked hard to secure a number of contracts across the north of Scotland and would lose some if he was unable to drive to them.

Mr Kelly said the loss of his employment would also affect his partner who is supported financially by him.

Sheriff Buchanan agreed and imposed six penalty points on his licence.

He also fined Tilley, of 113 Culter House Road, Milltimber, £600.
