Westie dogs descend on popular north-east park

There was puppy love aplenty for Westie-owners yesterday as more than 130 of the white-coated pooches took over a popular north-east park.

Animal lovers and their four-legged friends from all over the north-east descended on Duthie Park as another Westie Aberdeen meet-up took place in the Granite City.

The gathering has more than doubled in size since it launched in September, jumping from 50 dogs to more than 130 attendees yesterday afternoon.

Jenny Gordon, a West Highland Terrier owner from Bucksburn who set the group up, said she was overwhelmed at the interest so far.

She organised the event so that owners and their dogs could socialise and get to know each other.

“I also set it up because I just love Westie dogs,” she said.

At yesterday’s event, people were also raising money for two local charities – Mrs Murrays Cat & Dog Home and the West Highland Terrier re-homing centre.

Every pooch was also checked for where it was originally bought, so that Ms Gordon could match up any potential siblings.

“We haven’t found any so far, but as we get bigger who knows what we could find out,” she said.

Duthie Park’s bandstand was completely over-run by the Westies from 2pm, who ranged from five-week-old puppies to older, 14 and 15-year-old dogs.

Many of them also dressed up for the occasion, with colourful neck-ties and tartan coats.

The dogs spent some time getting to know each other before setting off on a big walk around the park.

No plans have been made for the next meet-up yet, but organisers have asked potential attendees to check out the group’s social media page.

Louise Fraser, from Garthdee, Aberdeen, said she was delighted there was an opportunity for Westie owners to finally meet up.

The 42-year-old rescued her dogs – 11-year-old Mollie and 13-year-old Lexie – from Mrs Murrays five years ago after their owner died.

“My two came from the re-homing centre through no fault of their own, and for the last five years they have brought me nothing but happiness,” she said.

“We’ve come from across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire today, but plan to do further outings depending on where other owners live.”
