Consultation on new Stoneywood school due to start in January

A consultation has been launched on plans to replace Stoneywood School
A consultation has been launched on plans to replace Stoneywood School

Members of the public will be invited to have their say on the location of a £13million new school for the Stoneywood area of Aberdeen.

A replacement will be built for the primary which received one of the lowest ratings in the city for the condition of its buildings.

Roll projections show the existing school is due to reach its capacity of 180 pupils by August 2015, with that number expected to double by 2021.

Aberdeen City Council has already agreed to go ahead with the building project, which has secured financial backing from the Scottish Government.

The local authority’s education and children’s services committee will be asked on Tuesday to agree to begin a period of statutory consultation.

The school is due for completion in time for the 2017/18 session.

The new building could be located on the existing site at Stoneywood Road, on the site of the former Bankhead Academy on Bankhead Avenue or on the playing fields of the former Bankhead secondary at Greenburn Drive.

The public consultation will start in January next year, with a report due back to the committee later in the year.

The building work will have to be completed by March 2017 to meet requirements set by the Scottish Government.

Angela Taylor, the council’s convener of education and children’s services, said it was “great news” for the city.

She added: “The school is currently C-listed in terms of its condition, there are only two in the city, and there are also capacity issues that we are going to face.

“I’m sure parents in the area will be delighted and I would encourage people to take part in the consultation next year.”
