Thieves have smashed their way into a Donside cafe and stolen a safe and more than £1,000 in cash and gift vouchers.

Alford and Bistro Cafe was targeted at the weekend, with the culprits breaking in through the back door.

Police believe the business, on the village’s Main Street, was raided sometime after 11.30pm on Saturday.

Owner John Allan arrived on Sunday morning to find the back door damaged, and the safe missing.

He said: “I came in and saw the back door had been smashed in.

“They entered in the night and made off with the safe, taking around a mid-four figure sum.”

The thieves stole a small black hotel safe, as well as gift vouchers and cash from the till.

Mr Allan added: “We have to get up and go on.

“It’s sad when these things happen, and of course we’re disappointed.”

Constable Neil Duncan, who is investigating the incident, urged anyone with information about the break-in to come forward.

He said: “I would ask members of the public who may have been offered vouchers for the Alford Bistro and Coffee Shop or have come across anyone in a possession of a large quantity of these gift vouchers that they contact us.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or may have seen any person or vehicle acting suspiciously on the night of Saturday December 13.”
