A group of aspiring engineers from Aberdeen Grammar School are aiming for the chequered flag in a global competition inspired by the thrills and skills of Formula One racing.

The youngsters have teamed up with Balmoral Offshore Engineering for the 2015 Bernie Ecclestone F1 in schools technology challenge.

The firm has shared its expertise with Team Atlanta as members manufacture their own miniature racing car propelled by a single gas canister.

Balmoral’s sponsorship has also helped pay for raw materials, team uniforms, transportation and the all important pit display.

The sixth year students have already been crowned Scottish champions after their vehicle finished first at the regional finals in Kircaldy.

They will now head to Birmingham for the UK national finals in March.

Balmoral chairman Jim Milne, said: “I am genuinely pleased to be able to support this unique challenge. I’m almost as passionate about F1 as I am about my business so I’ll be supporting the team all the way to the final.”

Team Atlanta manager Cledwyn Viegas also welcomed the partnership, adding: ” We are extremely proud to be working with a globally recognised organisation like Balmoral.”

The F1 in schools challenge was created 15 years ago and invol senior students from over 40 countries.

The last global final was held the weekend of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and was won by Team Colossus, hailing from England.
