Aberdeen school festival launches this weekend

Creativity in the classroom
Creativity in the classroom

A festival designed to promote arts and creativity in the classroom will be launched in Aberdeen this weekend.

Led by professional artists and musicians, Arts Across Learning starts on Saturday and will feature workshops tailored for pupils and teachers.

About 100 workshops, events and film screenings will be held for children in nurseries, primary schools and additional support needs schools, and will include visits by storyteller Grace Banks, the Walking Theatre Company and musician Jo Mango.

The month-long festival will be held at the Lightbox, on the third floor of Union Square, next door to Hobbycraft.

During the launch of the event – organised by Aberdeen City Council’s creative learning team – visitors will meet Austrian digital artists and educators OMAi, and get the chance to become light artists for the day. The animated collage they create will be beamed around the venue. The drop-in event will run from 10am-3pm, and is for all ages.

Angela Taylor, convener of education and children’s services committee at the council, said: “This year’s festival will give children, teachers and families access to the arts through innovative and enjoyable new experiences, which I am sure will be a great deal of fun as well as educational.

“With so much on offer it could encourage a lifelong interest in the arts and even lead to some to become artists in the future.”

The festival runs until March 21.
