Organisers of the north-east’s most popular annual fun run unveiled their plans for 2015.

The Peterhead Running Festival attracts hundreds of enthusiastic athletes each year and organisers are now hoping to build on last year’s tie-in with the Commonwealth Games.

The 2014 event coincided with the arrival of the Queen’s Baton Relay in the run up to the Glasgow sporting spectacle.

The fifth annual festival is being overseen by JogScotland with the backing of local sponsors. Last night JogScotland national boss Billy Mitchell said: “Whether you’re hoping to walk your first ever 5K or race hard to achieve a new personal best, it will be a fantastic event to take part in.

“Peterhead is one of the most vibrant of our nationwide jog groups, and we know they’ll do a brilliant job at making this an enjoyable day out for joggers and spectators alike.”

Two local companies – Masson and Glennie and MB Plant – will be the main sponsors of this year’s festival.

Local organiser Stephen Bruce said their support was crucial.

“Without their generous sponsorship it would be impossible to put on such an event of this scale in Peterhead,” he said.

The festival will be held on Sunday, June 28, and will include a half marathon, 5K and the return of the school fun run which last year attracted more than 400 pupils from 36 Aberdeenshire schools.

The half marathon route – now in its sixth year – stretches out through the Buchan countryside to St Fergus and back to Peterhead’s Catto Park.
