‘It’s just so shocking’: Safety fears after car crashes into Bridge of Don home

A car has crashed into a house in the Bridge of Don area of Aberdeen.

The fire service was called to the scene at Perwinnis Crescent at 3.20pm after reports of a car rolling into a house.

Pictures from the scene show a black Vauxhall car connected to the outer wall of the building.

There was nobody in the building when the car rolled into the side of the house.

Crews have cordoned off the area after concerns were raised that the house could now be unstable.

The car has since been removed from the wall, but it is being supported with beams to stop it from “crumbling”.

Two fire appliances remain at the scene until about 6.30pm before a structural engineer came to assess the damage.

Kenny Collie, watch commander for the fire service, said: “The recovery of the car wasn’t our biggest problem at the time, there was a big concern for the security of the building.

“The grass verge is on an angle and there is a slope, so our fear was that when we pull the car, it would slide straight back into the wall.

“So we had to winch it, pull it up and at the same time make sure the wall was secure enough not to crumble down.

“Thankfully there was nobody in the building at the time, but before we let the owners back in we need to make sure that the structure is secure. A structural engineer will come tonight to assess the damage and see what is needed for it to be repaired and give us advice about how we should proceed.

“There is obviously substantial damage to the building so we needed to secure it vertically to make sure that it doesn’t collapse. You can see there are cracks around the hole in the wall – both horizontally and vertically which gave the concern it might crumble down.”

‘We don’t know what we’re going to do now’

A neighbour’s young daughter had been playing at the play park across the road from the home when she saw the car roll down the slope and collide with the wall. She told her mum who then called the family that lives there.

The owner of the house, who wished to remain unnamed, told the Press & Journal he “didn’t know how to react” when he was told a car had crashed through his living room wall.

The dad of three was at work when he got the call and immediately packed up his things to rush home.

He said: “It’s shocking that this could have happened.

“I was just shocked, I didn’t even know how to react. I was at work when I got the call a car had gone through the wall, I just packed my stuff and rushed home.

“My family and I arrived about an hour after it happened. We don’t know what we’re going to do now, we’re spending the night in a hotel.

“We’re new to the neighbourhood, we just moved in in August.

“We spoke with the fire service, but they couldn’t really tell us much. we’re just waiting for them to assess the damage and let us know what to do next.

“Thankfully, we have house insurance so I’ve been on the phone with them to figure out what will happen.”

His 17-year-old daughter was on the bus with her mum when they got the call.

She said: “I’m always at home so are my two siblings when they aren’t at school, so the most important thing is that we weren’t when the car crashed into our living room.”

A police spokeswoman said: “We received a report of a crash involving one vehicle which happened around 2.45pm on Tuesday February 14, in Perwinnis Crescent, Bridge of Don.”
