Callous thieves vandalised headstone and stole ornaments from Aberdeenshire grave side

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward to help trace the culprits behind the theft
Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward to help trace the culprits behind the theft

Heartless thieves vandalised a headstone and stole ornaments from a grave at an Aberdeenshire cemetery.

The incident happened at the Portlethen Parish Church burial ground between April and September.

Police have now launched an investigation into the thefts and are appealing for information from the public.

The ornaments are thought to have been worth about £50, but had huge sentimental value.

Constable Joseph Smith, who is leading the inquiry, said: “These thefts have caused obvious stress and upset to the family members who visit the grave site, especially with the items stolen holding particular sentimental value.”

Last night, a local community leader condemned the thefts.

Ron Sharp, chairman of Portlethen and District Community Council, said the incidents had shocked the “close-knit” community.

Mr Sharp said: “I don’t know the reason behind these incidents but obviously it’s something strange to this part of Aberdeenshire.

“We’re not used to seeing anything like that here, Portlethen is still growing and we are still a very close-knit community.

“I hope the people responsible come to their senses and stop this, it must be very distressing for the family and relatives involved.”

Police have urged anyone with information to contact them on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
