Denis Law praises Aberdeen initiative to remove “No Ball Games” signs

Aberdeen-born football legend Denis Law has welcomed the removal of “No Ball Games” signs throughout his home city.

The 75-year-old former Scotland and Manchester United star was back in Aberdeen on Friday to take down one of the signs, as part of a process which will continue for the next nine months.

Denis said: “This is a brilliant initiative and one that is long overdue.

“It will open up community spaces throughout Aberdeen enabling kids to kick a ball about freely with their friends, which is really important for them.

“Aberdeen Greenspace and the local authority should be commended for their work to remove these signs.”

Denis grew up in the Printfield area of Aberdeen and was the youngest in a family of seven and went barefoot until 12 years of age.

On his 16th birthday, he received his first pair of football boots from a neighbour. During his career, he became the only Scot to win the “European Footballer of the Year” award.

He used to play on the streets of Aberdeen and has always encouraged youngsters to swap video games for real games.

The Manchester United legend is in Aberdeen for a dinner at the Marcliffe on Friday evening, which will celebrate the success of his “Streetsport” initiative, in association with RGU.
