Nestrans slammed for “ignoring” A90 community

Mearns councillor George Carr has criticised Nestrans for “ignoring” the needs of the community by not proposing an upgrade to the A90 junction to the north of Laurencekirk.

It comes as local residents call for a delivery date for a solution at an accident black spot on the road to the south of the town, at its junction with the A937 Montrose road.

Mr Carr said public feedback gathered during the Access to Laurencekirk consultation – which was endorsed by Aberdeenshire Council earlier this year – had shown a desire for both the south A937 junction and the north one to be upgraded.

However, Nestrans has said the improvements to the north junction should be developer-led and would depend on future housing schemes in the town.

Mr Carr added: “What I am really concerned about is the Nestrans consultation and recommendation which suggested we should only be going for one junction, which is completely contrary to the views of the community.

“Councillors had a view to a two-junction option. I think Nestrans took the view they would be lucky if they get even one junction, but that is not an excuse for ignoring the views of the public.

“My view is we are all need to be singing from the same hymn sheet. The whole thing is a bit of a mess.”

A Nestrans spokeswoman said: “The reason for focusing on a south junction is that is what the study suggested there was a need for. The north junction could be upgraded at a future date.”
