Plug pulled on Fraserburgh’s community radio station

Fraserburgh’s only local radio station might have broadcast its last show after 20 years on the airwaves.

Kinnaird Radio’s final programme went out earlier this week and the volunteer team have now been forced to suspend broadcasts indefinitely until they can find new sponsors.

Director and presenter John Sorrie said: “We are disappointed to announce that, after broadcasting to Fraserburgh and the surrounding area for 20 years, we have had to take the decision to stop.

“Lack of sponsorship and a shortage of presenters has meant that the station is not currently viable.”

Although capable of running throughout the week, Kinnaird Radio’s roster of volunteer presenters meant shows could only be carried on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday mornings.

Mr Sorrie believes that until the community station – which promotes local events and fundraising initiatives – can recruit presenters to fill the hours, they will struggle to find any sponsorship for shows.

He said: “We would like to think the station would be up and running again, but we need more sponsors and more presenters.”

Fellow presenter and Aberdeenshire councillor Brian Topping added: “We’re there for the benefit of the community.

“We advertise local events, buttery mornings, boot sales and fundraisers.

“We do them for nothing – our hope is to get as many people to turn up as possible. But we have to pay licence and rent and that all adds up.”
