A rising north-east singer is to perform at one of the country’s largest musical events this summer after scooping top prize in a competition.

Leanne Smith was born and raised in Macduff and has been pursuing her dream of becoming a recording artist since leaving for university two years ago.

The 22-year-old is currently studying for her masters degree in music therapy at Queen Margaret University between belting out hits and preparing for a trip to Inverness in August to play at the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival.

Last night, Ms Smith said she was browsing Facebook last year when she stumbled across an opportunity to win a slot performing at this summer’s festival on the Belladrum estate by taking part in a talent show.

She said: “It was a really cool experience. This will be my first proper slot.

“I played a busk there for the past two years, playing outside, but this is my first proper chance. I am really excited.”

The aspiring artist, who released an EP last June, added that the competition involved making it to the heats in Inverness’ Ironworks venue by submitting an online application form before the finalists were selected for a performance on Belladrum’s Venus Flytrap stage.

She added: “It was an amazing opportunity in itself.”

Ms Smith first put herself in t in 2013 when she supported English songstress Lucy Rose at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen.

The following summer, she made headlines when she performed a half-hour set at the Tiree Music Festival. And she has also performed at the prestigious Celebrate Aberdeen festival.

She said: “It’s a hobby, but I’m trying to make it as a professional.

“If you never try, though, you never know.”
