North-east woman assaulted shop security with trolley while trying to steal vacuum cleaner

A woman assaulted a shop security guard with a trolley after being challenged while trying to steal a vacuum cleaner.

Kelly Anne Booth admitted a string of offences when she appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday.

Among those she pleaded guilty to was stealing a Dyson vacuum cleaner worth £279 and two pairs of sunglasses, worth £119 and £99, from the Tesco shop on Laurel Drive, Bridge of Don, on Thursday.

The court heard that the 44-year-old, of Elrick Gardens in Newmachar, then took umbrage at being stopped by security guard George Stove.

Fiscal, Karen Dow, said: “The accused was seen pushing a trolley away from a till while looking suspicious.

“When the security guard asked her to show a receipt, Booth refused and pushed the trolley towards him, striking him.

“She began to shout and swear but was eventually calmed down and arrested.”

Court papers state that the accused also kicked Mr Stove.

Defence agent, Graeme Murray, said his client had recently been jailed for driving offences in Dumfries, but was released on Thursday, July 12.

He added: “She still has not received any benefits since she was liberated and she acted out of desperation, she was aiming to sell the items to get money to buy food.”

Booth also admitted driving while disqualified and without insurance at Asda on Jesmond Drive in Aberdeen on April 12 and again on April 14.

Sheriff Margaret Hodge disqualified Booth from driving for 21 months and sent her to prison for four months.
