Aberdeen’s oldest pub is closing for refurbishment next week.

Ma Camerons, on Little Belmont Street, will shut on Monday for the renovation project.

But last night, a spokesman for brewers Greene King promised customers it would not be changed too dramatically – and that the “character and charm” of the pub would remain.

The owners had originally planned to change the floors and partition the walls, but after listening to customers’ concerns, they have now opted to simply freshen up the venue with a fresh coat of paint and new furniture.

There will also be an extended range of beers and whisky for customers to sample.

A spokeswoman for the brewers of the pub – which dates back to 1746 – said: “We would like to reassure customers that we will be maintaining the character and charm the pub has always had by updating our plans.

“Our original plans for the pub always had the building’s history at the front of our minds, but we have listened to our customers and with that focus we will now keep changes to an absolute minimum.

“The work we are doing is an investment in the pub’s future designed to protect its history.

“We are proud of our pub’s heritage and we are grateful for the views of the customers who feel the same.”

The refurbishment will begin on Monday and last for two weeks.

Councillor Bill Cormie, of the Midstocket and Rosemount ward, said it was good hear that the landmark pub will retain its unique appeal.

He said: “Ma Camerons is a well-established bar in Aberdeen, it’s got a strong history and that’s unique these days.

“It’s always been a traditional alehouse and it’s good to hear it won’t be changed any further.”
