Two-vehicle crash in Aberdeen after van driver fell ill at the wheel

A van driver fell ill at the wheel and crashed head-on into another car yesterday, causing traffic chaos on a busy Aberdeen road.

The collision between a white BMW 118 and a red Mercedes Sprinter van happened on Great Southern Road, just outside the Duthie Park entrance around 3.50pm.

Emergency services, including police and paramedics, were called to the scene shortly afterwards.

An ambulance and a rapid response vehicle were both dispatched to the crash site.

The man driving the van was subsequently taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, after sustaining “non life-threatening” injuries.

Last night, a Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed the motorist was still in hospital, where he was in a “stable” condition.

A woman who was in the other vehicle was treated by paramedics for minor injuries at the scene.

The southbound lane of the road was closed for nearly an hour while officers waited for both vehicles to be removed, which caused delays on the road and surrounding area.

Meanwhile, a few miles across the city less than five minutes later, motorists were hit with delays on one of the city’s busiest roads.

A crash between a white BMW 330 and a lorry, close to North Anderson Drive’s junction with the Haudagain roundabout, led to congestion.

The incident happened near to the Esso petrol station, causing huge tailbacks that stretched back as far as the Lang Stracht.

Neither person involved was injured and no significant damage was caused to either vehicle.

Earlier on in the day, during the morning rush hour, emergency services were called to a two-car crash on Garthdee Road.

The collision – between a red Toyota IQ and a red Honda Civic – happened close to Sainsbury’s about 9.15am.

The road was blocked for around 45 minutes while the vehicles were cleared from the scene.

A police spokeswoman confirmed there were no injuries.
