Two brothers have set off on a gruelling, year-long cycle challenge a decade after their father took his own life to raise funds for mental health charities.

Craig, 25, and Lewis Moir, 20, will cycle 10,000 miles each over the next 12 months to raise funds for Mental Health Aberdeen and the Scottish Association for Mental Health and Mind.

The siblings, from Aberdeen, need to average around 30 miles per day to reach their ambitious target within a year.

Among the treks they want to take on to make up the miles include the Etape Royale in Aberdeenshire and Moray, and the Etape Loch Ness and Bealach Mor Sportive in the Highlands.

The pair started their challenge on Sunday, 10 years to the day their father died.

Craig, who lives in Bridge of Don, said: “We were both quite young when it happened and it is still a struggle for the family. As a family we have found it difficult to speak about the fact my dad committed suicide.

“On a personal level I never speak to other people about it, probably just because that is how I deal with it.

“I am hoping that by doing this my family and friends won’t be so worried about speaking about my dad to us.

“At the same time, a lot of our kit will have the logos of the charities we are supporting on it so while out and about we will be able to explain why we are doing it and what services are available through the three charities we are supporting.

“Any donation will be greatly appreciated and give us the motivation to carry on, even with aching legs and dealing with all kinds of weather conditions.”
