An Aberdeenshire school community is preparing to take a trip back in time this weekend when it celebrates the 80th anniversary of the building.

Cluny Primary, at Sauchen, will welcome past pupils to a nostalgic afternoon on Saturday.

The event, which is on from 1pm to 4pm at the school, will feature vintage vehicles, retro games and an exhibition of historical pictures.

Selina Zimmermann, a member of the school’s parent council, said: “We are celebrating the school’s 80th birthday and its history from the 1930s.

“We have had lots of people coming in to the school over the past couple of weeks with photographs of when they or their children were at the school.

“There are also residents who say that their children, who are in their 30s and 40s, are coming home for the weekend so that they can come and visit their old school.”

Current pupils at the school will also be taking part in the event by dressing up in costumes from a decade of the school’s history, and helping out at the stalls.

Games reminiscent of country fairs in days gone by such as tin-can alley, and whack-a-rat, while World Cup fever will be in the air as would-be Messis try and beat the goalie.

The children have also been practicing historical songs and will perform these on Saturday.

Councillor for Westhill and District, Iris Walker, said: “Cluny may be a small community, but it is a very active one, and there is always a lot going on, so I know a lot of hard work will be going into Saturday’s celebrations.

“There are ties that you make in the early years at school which last a lifetime, and it will be good for friends to catch up with each other.

“It will be good to celebrate the school’s history and I wish everyone all the best for Saturday – the organisers, staff and pupils, and all those attending.”

Cluny School’s most famous former-pupil is ex-Dons footballer Neil Simpson who is currently head of youth for the Pittodrie side.

Gothenburg giant Simpson has returned to the school in recent years to deliver football coaching sessions.
