A man was in a serious condition in hospital last night following a horrific car and tractor smash on a north-east road.

Police, ambulance and fire crews were called to the A944 Aberdeen to Strathdon road, near Dunecht, and discovered the tractor – which was pulling a trailer – overturned and off the road.

The driver of the grey Seat Leon was cut free from the wreckage of his vehicle and taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with life-threatening injuries.

Last night police confirmed his condition was still severe, but that he had shown marginal improvements.

The condition of the tractor driver is unknown.

The accident happened at Tillyfoddie, near Dunecht, about 2.20pm on Saturday.

The collision resulted in the tractor overturning and landing off the road, while it still appeared to be attached to its trailer.

The grey car was also forced off the side of the road.

Fire crews from Kintore and North Anderson Drive attended the scene, and a team of 10 used cutting gear to free two people from the vehicle.

The road was closed for more than 10 hours while collision investigators carried out their inquiries at the crash site.

Motorists were forced to use alternative routes through Dunecht and Sauchen.

The road was reopened at about 12.30am.

Meanwhile, earlier that same day, emergency services were called to a one-car crash on the B999 Aberdeen to Tarves road, just outside of Potterton, at about 1.50pm.

A police spokesman confirmed a vehicle had veered off the road and the driver suffered minor injuries.
