A particular bugbear and worry for police is the number of people still using their mobile phones while driving.
It has been banned for years – and at the beginning of March the penalty for being caught doubled to six points and a £200 fine.
That is enough to take a new driver off the road.
But despite the risks Sergeant Chris Murray said the north police still attend fatal collisions where mobile phones are believed to have played a part.
The Dingwall-based officer said: “The penalty for using a phone behind the wheel will be far greater.
“I can’t stress enough that for a new driver, to pick up that phone could cost them their licence.
“And even for any other driver doing it twice will disqualify you. It’s just not worth it.
“It’s a bid penalty to try and discourage it because we still go to fatal collisions where phones appear to be in use or have been confirmed to be in use.”
He added: “Technology has moved on and the law is keeping up to a certain extent.
