A west Highland cinema has been awarded not one, but two grants to help renovate its roof and foyer area.

Oban Phoenix Cinema were awarded a £22,000 grant from the Crerar Trust and £6,000 from the Oban Common Good Fund.

Duty manager Catriona Hoon said the community-owned picture house was delighted with the news.

“We are a small independent community-owned cinema in Oban on the west coast of Scotland and this is fantastic news and will be a real boost to development plans we have for our cinema,” she said.

Oban Phoenix Cinema plans to use the funding to renovate the cinema roof and make improvements to the foyer area.

The cinema, a community enterprise, is currently carrying out surveys with local users and is looking to improve the customer experience, complete much-needed building maintenance and secure a long-term vision.

Paddy Crerar CBE, chairman of The Crerar Trust, said: “We are delighted to have made this award to Oban Phoenix Cinema and look forward to hearing how this funding helps impact their work.

“Crerar Hotels is committed to giving back to the local community to help it grow and thrive and provide opportunities that may otherwise seem out of reach.

“For every stay our customers have with us they are supporting others, who really need it.

“It is great for our folk in the hotels to see their hard work and efforts helping people in their own communities as well as those from throughout the whole of Scotland.”

A spokeswoman for Oban Phoenix Cinema said: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this funding, which will go straight into the cinema to repair the roof and improve the foyer.

“Thank you so much to the Crerar Trust for helping us to get started.

“We are also encouraging people to please fill out our survey on the website, so we know what is important to our customers.

“There are lots of exciting things in the pipeline, it’s a great time for the cinema.”
