More heavy rain is forecast for the north of Scotland

Flooding and landslides in the north at the weekend were caused by rain falling on saturated ground, rather than by the volume of rain falling in the past few days.

And more downpours are expected before the ground has a chance to dry out.

Met Office forecaster Peter Sloss said: “We didn’t have a huge amount of rain at the weekend, but the ground was still saturated from last week.”

He added that the latest band of rain brought around one inch to the worst affected areas.

He said: “Further showers are expected in the north overnight and during the day on Monday, but not prolonged, heavy rain like we saw Saturday night and the early part of last week.

“Through late Monday and into Tuesday, the low pressure moves away to the north.

“This will be replaced by northerly winds that will make it feel a lot cooler and provide some respite from the rain.”

The next band of heavy rain is expected during Thursday night and into Friday.

Mr Sloss said: “In a couple of days, the river systems will come down a bit, but the ground itself is completely saturated and will not get a chance to dry out so there could well be more incidents towards the end of next week and into the weekend.”
