Wind damaged roof stops pupils leaving north school

More than 800 pupils at Lochaber High School were kept indoors for their safety when the roof of their school was damaged by high winds today.

The busy A830 trunk road alongside the Fort William school was also closed and motorists and pedestrians were asked to avoid the area.

The measures were put in place after a strip of metal that formed part of the new roof on the school started flapping.

Contractors Roberston were able to go onto the roof to deal with the problem when the wind dropped.

A police spokeswoman said the Fort William to Mallaig road was closed at around midday as a “precautionary measure” and remained closed until about 2.30pm. Traffic was diverted via the B8006 through Caol.

Head teacher Jim Sutherland said: “The road is closed because a bit of the roof is in danger of flying away.

“The children are safe inside the school and will be kept inside until the wind drops so the contractors can get up there to make it safe, but it is not safe for anyone to go up there to look at it at the moment.”

The 831 pupils at the school were kept in the building over the lunch period and food was provided in the canteen.

Soon after 3pm, Highland Council announced that the road had reopened and all school transport would be running as planned. A spokeswoman said the school planned to open as normal tomorrow.

A Robertson spokesman said: “As a result of the extreme weather conditions, a section of the roof currently under construction became loose.”
