The A9 Inverness to Perth road was closed for more than 18 hours on Friday following a serious collision between two HGV lorries near Carrbridge.
Lorry driver Alan Jones, 64, from Inverness, died at the scene.
Emergency crews were called to the trunk road around 4.15am following reports of a collision between Slochd summit and Carrbridge.
The incident, which was confirmed to had only involved the two lorries, happened close to the A938 Carrbridge junction.
At the time, a police spokesman said: “Around 4.15am on Friday, September 30 police received a report of a serious road crash on the A9, near the Carrbridge junction.
“Emergency services are currently at the scene and the road is currently closed between Inverness and Carrbridge.
“Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.”
A total of three fire appliances were dispatched to the scene alongside special resource units around 4.30am on Friday.
A fire spokesman said: “At 4.30am operations control mobilised three appliances and special resources to assist emergency service partners at an incident on the A9, south of the Slochd summit.”
One fire appliance and the heavy rescue unit from Inverness remained in attendance until around 9am before returning to base.
Road closed for 18 hours with 65-mile diversion route
Motorists travelling along the route on Friday faced a 65-mile diversion, compared to the 18.7-mile route initially listed.
Vehicles were first diverted away from the crash site through Dulnain Bridge and back onto the A9 trunk road, north of Carrbridge.
All traffic was later directed east towards Grantown and the A96 Elgin to Inverness road, with southbound traffic traffic also ushered along the same route.
The reason for the change in diversion was unclear.
However, Traffic Scotland had previously warned HGVs were being stacked on the A9 due to a weak bridge on the initial diversion route.
