Firefighters tackled a fire on farmland near Alness

Nearly 100 straw bales have been destroyed in a suspected deliberate fire on farm land in Ross-shire.

Fire crews were called to the farm at Contullich near Alness at around 7pm on Tuesday.

Between 80 and 100 bales were destroyed in the fire, which police are now investigating as being possibly deliberate.

The bales were stacked in the open and no one was injured and no property was damaged as a result of the fire.

Invergordon firefighters used two hosereel jets and other small gear to extinguish it.

A fire and rescue spokeswoman said that the farmer had also provided help.

The blaze was fully extinguished just before 10.10pm.

Fire service group manager Phil Green said: “Although this incident is still under investigation there is a possibility that this fire was deliberately set.

“We would like to remind everyone about the dangers involved in deliberate fire setting.

“These fires can threaten properties and consequently people’s safety. There is also a risk to animals, birds and the environment.

“Deliberate fires draw fire service resources away from other serious and potentially life threatening incidents.

“Fire setting is an offence – don’t accept it, report it.

“We would encourage anyone with information to contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
