Oban people “Light up a Life” for Christmas

The trees around the Corran Halls in Oban have been beautifully lit up to remember the lives of lost loved ones this Christmas.

The Light Up a Live event is run by Oban Hospice every year.

Around 100 people attended the tenth Light Up A Life event on Tuesday night.

As part of the event people are invited to remember someone special and sponsor one of the lights on the trees outside the Corran Halls.

Oban Gaelic choir was singing Gaelic songs as well as leading the singing of Christmas carols and Aaron Hossain played the pipes.

Chairman of Oban Hospice board, David Entwistle, who led the event, said that Oban Hospice is currently helping around 45 people.

This is happening through their day hospice, where they are supporting seven people, and their community services which are helping 28 patients as well as 10 carers.

He went on to praise the help of their fundraising group, the Friends of Oban Hospice, who are raising around £30,000 every year.

He said: “The Friends of Oban Hospice, who have been around for a number of years now, tirelessly work hard at raising local funds for us. It is our main source of income and every penny of that is spent locally.

“At the moment we are supporting more than 30 people locally with various illnesses and long term conditions. We have got about 30 people we are actively supporting and another 10 or so who we help on a more irregular basis. People’s need for support varies according to their conditions and circumstances.

“The Light up a Life scheme has been going for 10 years now and it is great that people can have the opportunity to remember their loved ones.”

Mr Entwistle added that while their focus going forward was care in the community they were hoping to establish a base in the town within a year or two.

The sponsor’s dedications will be added to the annual dedication book which will be displayed in the public library in Albany Street, Oban, in the new year.

Forms to sponsor a light on the trees at the Corran Halls can still be obtained from: Friends of Oban Hospice, c/o Argyll Voluntary Action, Attention of K Black, 21 High Street, Oban, Argyll PA34 4BG.
