Fort William’s mountain bike world cup has been voted the best downhill event on this year’s world circuit by cycling’s international governing body.

The 15th mountain bike world cup took place in June on the slopes of Aonach Mor and drew a record 22,000 spectators.

The event has for the tenth time been given the ultimate recognition by the Union Cycliste Internationale.

It has been described by many as one of the most memorable downhill world cups in history and included emotional farewells to legendary riders of the sport.

And organisers Rare Management are now gearing up for next year’s event on June 3-4 and have confirmed Early Bird tickets are now on sale.

Event organiser Mike Jardine said the accolade cements the world class reputation for the sport in the Highlands.

He added: “This year’s event was very special and surpassed all our expectations. The award is testament to the hard work of all of our partners, sponsors, riders, volunteers and fans who continue to make this event a truly legendary and unique experience for all the family.”

The event takes places at the Nevis Range ski area near Fort William and has delivered an estimated £33million to the economy since 2002.

The spectacle is supported by Highland Council and EventScotland.

Tickets start from £15.50 for adults and £8.50 for children (aged 6 – 17 years old). Family packages are also available starting from £40.
