A British Sign Language interpreter has translated for a Highland Council meeting for the first time.
Cheryl Mechan signed during an item on the council’s arrangements for supporting the deaf community in the Highlands.
Members of the community safety, public engagement and equalities committee heard that in the past finding interpreters in the region has been difficult.
However Ms Mechan is now employed by the council. She help deaf people at appointments, parents’ evenings, hospital and GP appointments.
Equal opportunities officer Rosemary Mackintosh said that the service is available to constituents across the area.
She said that the service also used freelance interpreters from outwith the Highlands to complement local staff.
