A Highland trunk road has partially reopened after a two-car crash in which both vehicles caught fire this evening.

Fire, police and ambulance services attended the scene of the accident, which happened near the Arisaig House Hotel at Beasdale on the A830 Road to the Isles in Lochaber at around 5.45pm.

It is understood two people were injured, but there is no information on the nature of their injuries or their condition at this time.

The Fort William to Arisaig road was closed in both directions between Arisaig junction and the A861 junction in Lochailort for about two hours after the accident.

It partially reopened shortly before 8pm and police were directing traffic.

A fire service spokeswoman said appliances from Fort William and Acharacle were called out, with the Acharacle crew arriving first soon after 6.20pm.

She said firefighters used two main jets and two sets of breathing apparatus to tackle the fire, which was extinguished just before 6.35pm. They then remained at the crash site to make the scene safe.

She said: “The occupants were out of the vehicles before crews arrived.”
