A number of offers to buy a former Oban school will be considered by a council tomorrow.
Argyll and Bute Council’s area committee for Oban, Lorn and the Isles will discuss the bids it has received for Rockfield in Oban’s town centre.
A housing association wants to demolish the school and built flats in its place.
But local group Oban Communities Trust proposes to refurbish the building and turn it into a cultural centre and community hub.
The area committee is due to meet on Tiree tomorrow afternoon and the sale of the school will be discussed in private.
The closing date for offers for Rockfield was Friday August 8, but the council has refused to disclose how many offers it has received.
However it is known that there are at least two.
A council spokeswoman said: “All bids received will be evaluated and a report prepared for the Oban, Lorn and the Isles area committee.”
Gordon McNab, of Oban Communities Trust, said: “The decision for the future of Rockfield School is now in the hands of our elected councillors.
“We can only hope that the offer from the Oban Communities Trust will be accepted. Rockfield is a vision for Oban’s future.
“Oban Communities Trust can provide basic community needs – from public toilets, to parking, heritage, arts, culture, community functions servicing needs across the board; help relieve loneliness, help the elderly, the young. It will provide a focus, a hub for everyone in our communities.”
He said that organisations interested in being based at the hub and paying the trust rent included North Argyll Carers, MacQueen’s Charitable Trust, Oban FM and VisitScotland.
Argyll Community Housing Association (ACHA), has offered to pay £1 for the school. It wants to invest £5million in demolishing the building and redeveloping the site to provide 37 homes.
Alastair MacGregor, chief executive of Acha, said: “There are currently 659 people looking for affordable homes in the town.”
The building in the town centre has lain empty since 2007 when the school relocated to the new primary campus on Soroba Road.
