Ross-shire rugby club gifted Commonwealth Games posts

A sports club in Ross-shire have been gifted the rugby posts that were used at the Commonwealth Games back in July.

Invergordon club Ross Sutherland were awarded the Glasgow 2014 kit as part of sportscotland’s legacy plan for the games.

The 56ft uprights were used in the rugby sevens competition held at Ibrox, which saw South Africa claim gold in front of record breaking crowds.

Ross Sutherland played their first match under the towering new posts on Saturday, losing 17-31 to visitors Moray in a north league match.

But despite the disappointing result, club president Andy Mohun is hopeful that the new posts will prove a boost to the club.

He said: “We’ve been waiting a couple of weeks to get them up but now they’re here they look fantastic.

“It’s great to bring a bit of the Commonwealth Games to Invergordon and hopefully it will encourage a few more people to come along and give rugby a go.

“They’re a lot taller than our old posts and they seem to be one of the highest points in Invergordon now. They’re a real local landmark.”

A group of rugby fans from the club had made the trip to Ibrox to watch the South Africans beat reigning champions New Zealand to the gold medal, little knowing that they would soon be playing under the same posts.

Stephan Walker, who led the successful bid for the posts, said: “To be honest, I didn’t think we had a chance of getting them so to say this is a fantastic outcome doesn’t begin to convey just how much this means to our club.

“To think that we’ll be playing in front of posts that were seen by more than 170,000 people at the Commonwealth Games and by millions worldwide, is just incredible.”

Scottish Rugby’s club services manager for Caledonia, Brian Bell, said: “This gift is well deserved as they work hard throughout their club to ensure they have high-quality facilities to offer their local community in the north of Scotland.

“Their facilities have come on leaps and bounds in recent years with the introduction of lights and by upgrading their clubhouse and now the new posts.”
