Police have made a fresh appeal for witnesses to an accident in which an 83-year-old widow was killed.

Hazel Mackerness, of Forres, died after she was struck by two cars on the A96 Inverness-Aberdeen road on September 23.

The accident happened on the trunk road near Tornagrain at around 8.25pm.

Officers trying to establish her movements have now released new details of her journey.

Mrs Mackerness was at the bus stop opposite the Tesco filling station at Inverness Retail Park at 7.30pm.

It is understood that she travelled to the city earlier in the day.

At 8pm, she was at the bus stop on the eastbound lane of the A96 at Tornagrain.

Mrs Mackerness is described as 5ft tall, slim build with short grey hair.

She was wearing a blue jacket, dark trousers and aqua blue shoes.

She was also carrying a silver walking stick and a beige shoulder bag.

Neighbours in the quiet cul-de-sac in Forres where Mrs Mackerness lived alone described her as an “independent lady” who loved to travel.

At the time of her death, neighbour Joan Machray said: “Hazel was an interesting person who travelled a lot, loved flower arranging and was a member of a local flower club.

“Most of all, she was a very independent lady and loved nothing better than to go abroad, especially during the winter when the weather was severe.”

Anyone who saw Mrs Mackerness or anyone fitting the description should contact police on 101.
